2022 FIFA World Cup

The 2022 FIFA World Cup has reached the quarterfinals stage. 16 teams have been eliminated from the tournament and the remaining 16 teams will advance to the knockout stages.

Let’s have a brief look at the knockout stages

– 3 Asian sides made it to the Round of 16 in new World Cup record – No team managed to win all 3 group stage matches for the first time since 1994

In the 2018 World Cup, Belgium placed third, making them one of the favourites to win the tournament. However, their disappointing 0-0 draw with Croatia and unexpected 2-0 loss to Morocco put an early halt to their season.

The 2014 winners have now failed to advance in the two World Cups since. Germany felt the sting of elimination after it failed to overcome its stunning 2-1 loss to Japan.


After opening the tournament with a draw against South Korea, Uruguay had a similar departure, losing despite defeating Ghana 2-0 in the last match.


Group C topper Argentina will face Group D runner-up Australia in its Round of 16 match on December 4. While Argentina will start the match as favourites, Australia has shown that it is capable of competing with teams stronger on paper

Matches to look out in Round of 16

Group G topper Brazil, one of the title favourites, will take on Group H runner up South Korea which have shocked Cristiano Ronalod’s Portugal by 2-1. This is going to be an interesting fixture in the round of 16.

To keep their captain's chances of winning the World Cup alive, Ronaldo's Portugal will do everything they have to go into the semifinals, but they must overcome the Swiss squad to do it.
