A few months ago, the dilapidated bridge was handed over to the Orewa Group for maintenance and repair for 15 years. After 6 months of repairs, Overa opened its doors on October 26.
More than 400 people were allowed on the bridge which could carry only 100 people. Some mischievous men started swinging on the bridge. The bridge collapsed in a jolt and fell into the river.
The collapse of the dam claimed the lives of 5,000–10,000 people. Numerous lakhs of acres of crops were destroyed, and thousands of livestock perished.
