Mukarram Jah Bahadur took the throne as the successor of Osman Ali Khan ( last reigning Nizam of Hyderabad State), as his father Azman Jah was considered unfit for rule.

Mukarram’s grandfather was Osman Ali Khan, who was once considered one of the wealthiest people on the planet.

Adjusted for inflation, Osman Ali Khan’s net worth is estimated at USD 236 billion. He died in 1967 at the age of 80.

He also owned a diamond, "Jacob Diamond," which is used as paper weight and now costs more than INR 1,000 crore.

As Mukarram took the throne after his grandfather’s death, he also inherited the lavish properties of the Nizam empire. Mukarram is also considered one of the richest men in his time in Hyderabad.

The Nizam's wealth, according to The New York Times, could not be calculated but was estimated to be more than $2 billion at the time.

His mother Princess Durru Shehvar was the princess of the Ottoman empire in Turkey and daughter of the last Ottoman Caliph Abdul Majid II. Besides, the Nizam's wife is a Turkish citizen.

In 1970, then prime minister Indira Gandhi introduced a bill in Parliament abolishing princely privileges which was a huge financial blow for Mukarram. Mukarram then migrated to Australia in 1972.

In Australia, he mostly led a low-key life away from public attention; he worked as a shepherd following in his uncle Caliph II footsteps.

He left Australia in the 1990s and shuttled between London, Istanbul, and Hyderabad.

The first was a Turkish noblewoman, Esra Birgin. They had one son and one daughter.

‘H.E.H. The Nizam's Charitable Trust’ which is run by his family in Hyderabad, owns many places and heritage centers in Hyderabad including the Falunknama hotel and Chowmahalla Palace.
