'Slaves' Comment Backfires: Tamil Actress Kasthuri Shankar Schooled on Chennai's Telugu Origins and Tamil Nadu's Hidden Telugu Heritage
'Slaves' Comment Backfires: Tamil Actress Kasthuri Shankar Schooled on Chennai's Telugu Origins and Tamil Nadu's Hidden Telugu Heritage
Tamil actress Kasthuri Shankar, known for her roles in several blockbuster films like 'Bharatheeyudu', has recently made inappropriate comments targeting the Telugu-speaking people, equating them to slaves. Her comments, which purportedly elaborate on historical contexts, have sparked controversy in both Telugu states and have become a topic of discussion even in Tamil Nadu, where she is currently a member of the BJP. However, if Kasthuri were aware of history, she might have refrained from such remarks. Knowing the significant contributions of Telugu rulers, leaders, and individuals in Tamil lands would have offered a better perspective. What Exactly Happened? Tamil actress Kasthuri's recent comments have caused severe uproar in the Telugu states. During an event organized in Gurumoorthy Nagar in Chennai, she joined the BJP and targeted the DMK and the Karunanidhi family. She remarked that Telugu people, who initially came to serve in the royal courts 300 years ago, are now claiming Tamil identity, questioning who are others to deny Tamil identity to the Brahmins who came here long ago. She suggested that Dravidian ideologists oppose Brahmins merely because they advise against coveting others' wives, and thus, they oppose Sanathana Dharmam. She also claimed that speaking Telugu alone is enough to become ministers in Tamil Nadu, noting that five Telugu ministers are currently in the DMK government. Impact on Tamil History One of the prominent dynasties that ruled Tamil Nadu was the Cholas, among whom Kulottunga Chola-I was of Telugu descent. His father was Rajaraja Narendra, a ruler from the Vengi Chalukya dynasty who governed the region between Krishna and Godavari in present-day Andhra Pradesh. Kulottunga Chola’s mother, Ammangaidevi, was a princess in the Chola realm. After her father's death, instability plagued the Chola kingdom, leading Kulottunga to safeguard his grandfather's empire and continue ruling there. His descendants also successfully ruled Tamil Nadu. From 1061-1118, Kulottunga ruled as a Chalukya emperor, but his son Vikrama Chola became a Chola emperor, illustrating that the blood of Telugu Chalukyas was present in him. Historians often state that a Telugu person ruled the great Tamil kingdom of the Cholas, clearly marking the impact of Telugu culture on Tamil history. Image credit: Wikimedia Commons The Telugu Name Behind ‘Chennai’ The name of Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu, comes from a Telugu person. In 1639, Damerla Chennappa Nayakudu, a prince under Venkatapati Nayak, a lord from the Andhra Padmanayaka dynasty, governed the area. The British, under the East India Company, settled there and later renamed the area as Madras. Over time, the area became known as Madras, but locals preferred to call it Chennai Pattinam or Chennapuri. Following local preference, after independence, the name was officially changed to Chennai in August 1996. Image credit: Wikimedia Commons Telugu Influence on Madras Previously, the combined state of Madras, now Tamil Nadu, was united with Andhra Pradesh. Due to Potti Sreeramulu’s hunger strike, Andhra Pradesh was formed as a separate state on October 1, 1953. Telugu people played vital roles in all sectors in the erstwhile Madras state, contributing to its development. From 1925-29, Srikalahasti zamindar Panaganti Ramarayanam served as the president of the Justice Party and Chief Minister of Madras, during which the current Thyagaraya Nagar was established. Between 1932-36, Bobbili Raja, Sri Ramakrishna Ranga Rao, served as the Chief Minister of the Madras Presidency. Rao Bahadur Kurma Venkata Reddy Naidu worked as the Governor of Madras. Even before the split, Prakasam Pantulu, a Telugu person, served as the Chief Minister of the united Madras state. The first three graduates in law from Madras University were Telugu. Thus, Telugu individuals significantly impacted politics, education, medicine, law, and commerce. Image credit: Wikimedia Commons Hundreds of Telugu Manuscripts Vijayanagara Emperor Sri Krishnadevaraya, known to all Telugu people, wrote 'Amuktamalyada' under the witness of his court's Ashtadiggajas, which is still preserved in the Tanjavur library in Tamil Nadu. Along with it, 778 palm manuscripts covering mathematics, science, and mythology are stored there, demonstrating the extent of Telugu cultural influence in Tamil Nadu. This cultural patronage by ancient kings highlights Tamil Nadu as a symbol of cultural integration, which everyone should recognize.

ANR 100th Birth Anniversary: Celebrating Akkineni Nageswara Rao, the Pioneer of Dance in Tollywood
ANR 100th Birth Anniversary: Celebrating Akkineni Nageswara Rao, the Pioneer of Dance in Tollywood
Akkineni Nageswara Rao (ANR), one of the foundational pillars of Tollywood, needs no special introduction. Recognized as a Dadasaheb Phalke Award recipient, Padma Vibhushan, and Natasamrat, he left an indelible mark on the industry. Born on September 20, 1924, as his centenary completes today, fans globally are celebrating his 100th birth anniversary. Although widely known as a legendary actor, not everyone is aware that he was also an excellent dancer. In fact, he was the one who introduced dance to Tollywood, a fact that might be unknown to this generation. Let’s delve into this special report to learn more about it. [toc] The Pioneer of Dance in Tollywood Looking back to the early days of Tollywood, dance was not a primary focus when the industry first began. Leading actors were not keen on dancing; their focus was entirely on how to act and express emotions to captivate the audience. This was particularly noticeable between the 1960s and 1970s. When heroines danced, heroes would often just stand by, a point of criticism at the time. However, Akkineni Nageswara Rao completely changed these dynamics. While many associate Tollywood dance primarily with Megastar Chiranjeevi, it was Nageswara Rao who laid the groundwork for dance in the industry, making it an essential skill for heroes, matching and even excelling alongside heroines in dance. At one point, seeing Nageswara Rao’s dance, contemporaries like Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao, Superstar Krishna, Shobhan Babu, and Krishnam Raju also began to emphasize dance in their films. Audiences Mesmerized by Akkineni's Steps! In the 1971 film 'Dasara Bullodu', ANR’s performance in the song ‘Ettage Unnadi Olammi’ was mesmerizing. Similarly, in 'Bangaru Babu', his dance to 'Chengavi Rangu Cheera' electrified audiences who, until then, primarily enjoyed songs for their auditory appeal. Specifically, his dance in 'Prem Nagar' for the song ‘Nenu Puttanu Lokam Navvindi’ became a trendsetter. Additionally, his competitive dance with Sridevi in 'Premabhishekam' for the song 'Ne Kallu Chebuthunnayi' delighted everyone. He also matched steps with Megastar Chiranjeevi in the film 'Mechanic Alludu'. There’s a long list of such performances, some of which are linked below for a glimpse into his prowess. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OG_H1fNnWJA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uWhPlHc0yoU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nTt-kp2Lndc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zA_uVs7H7G0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y_p90nJNsB8 Inspired by Nageswara Rao... Even Megastar Chiranjeevi, known for his dance, was inspired by Nageswara Rao at one point. It’s said that Chiru enhanced the importance of dance in films after watching Nageswara Rao’s movies. In an event, Chiranjeevi made interesting remarks about ANR's influence, noting that after watching Chiru’s dance, one might wonder if his body actually had any bones at all. Over the decades, as Chiranjeevi became a peerless hero in acting and dancing, he carried forward the legacy initiated by Nageswara Rao, which now continues with stars like Allu Arjun, Ram Charan, NTR, and Ram Pothineni. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pFTIlMls-98 Interesting Post by Balakrishna On the occasion of ANR's 100th birth anniversary, actor Balakrishna posted a touching tribute, expressing pride in remembering Nageswara Rao. He noted that ANR's iconic roles and invaluable contributions to Telugu cinema are unforgettable and serve as a guiding light to all actors. Balakrishna urged everyone to express their gratitude for the immense services ANR provided to the film industry, from theater to cinema. His journey is an inspiration to all. Balakrishna's 'Daku Maharaj' Teaser Sparks Curiosity – Is This the Story Behind His Three Intense Roles?
Balakrishna's 'Daku Maharaj' Teaser Sparks Curiosity – Is This the Story Behind His Three Intense Roles?
Nandamuri Balakrishna, a name synonymous with mass entertainers in Tollywood, has been delivering a string of hits with his recent mass entertainers. Currently, he is working on a film with director Bobby, known as NBK 109. The film team recently announced the title as 'Daku Maharaj' and released a gripping teaser that gave goosebumps to Nandamuri fans. However, the title and teaser alone subtly reveal the plot of the film. Let's take a closer look. What’s in the Teaser? Produced under the banner of Sithara Entertainments by Naga Vamshi, the upcoming film 'Daku Maharaj' featuring actor Balakrishna and directed by Bobby is set to be a Sankranthi release on January 12, 2025. The released teaser starts with the dialogue, "This story isn’t about gods who spread light, nor about demons who dominate darkness, not even about Ravana who played with demons. This story is about a king who waged wars without a kingdom, a Yama wielding a mighty axe, a Maharaja who terrified even death itself." The visuals and dialogues delivered by Balakrishna in the teaser promise an intense action-packed narrative. Fans are excited, anticipating another mass spectacle from Balakrishna. https://twitter.com/SitharaEnts/status/1857296349605273899 Inspired by Daku Mansingh... The role of 'Daku Maharaj' played by Balakrishna is reportedly based on the real life of a person. Moviegoers are curious about who this 'Daku Maharaj' could be. His real name is known to be Daku Mansingh, a famous dacoit from the Punjab and Chambal regions. Amitabh Bachchan once mentioned in an interview that he was quite fearful of Mansingh’s robberies and his ability to escape during his childhood. It’s notable that Mansingh didn’t use the stolen wealth for himself but distributed it among the poor, according to the locals from Chambal. https://twitter.com/SitharaEnts/status/1857296349605273899 Is This the Story? The recent teaser suggests that director Bobby has crafted Balakrishna’s film inspired by the famous dacoit Daku Mansingh. This implies that in the film, Balakrishna's character will likely stand with the people, targeting those who exploit and rob them. He seems poised to cleverly redistribute the wealth taken from the oppressors back to the people. The story is also said to reflect three different eras, raising the question of whether Daku Maharaj will be a central figure throughout the film or just part of one segment. https://twitter.com/SitharaEnts/status/1857296349605273899 Balakrishna in Three Roles... After the superhit 'Bhagavanth Kesari', Balakrishna is back in 'Daku Maharaj', featuring alongside Pragya Jaiswal, Chandini Chowdary, and Shraddha Srinath. Bollywood actor Bobby Deol will appear in a key role, and a leading actor from the Malayalam film industry is also expected to join the cast. The story will reportedly show Balakrishna in three different aspects, promising another level of action sequences. S.S. Thaman is composing the music for this film. https://twitter.com/SitharaEnts/status/1857296349605273899

Meera Jasmine, making her re-entry into Telugu cinema after 11 years, adequately delivers her role. Daksha Nagarkar marks her presence with her glamour, though her role lacks depth. Despite the presence of seasoned actors like Ravi Babu and Sunil, their roles do not stand out as the film primarily revolves around Sree Vishnu. The rest of the cast performed adequately. Direction Director Hasith Goli chose an interesting point for the film but the execution appears quite chaotic. The first half of the film leaves the audience puzzled for about 40 minutes until the comedy provides some relief. The director interestingly showcases Bhavabhuti's flashback and leads into the story well. The interval block may seem a bit messy but is passable. The first half overall can be described as average. Coming to the second half, the way Yabhuti's flashback is designed impresses the audience. Some double-meaning dialogues manage to evoke laughter. However, the climax again ends in confusion. The director concludes the film with a line indicating that gender discrimination is a blight on society, but the film feels abruptly ended, leaving a sense of incompleteness. The screenplay is quite confusing and demands full attention to grasp the storyline. Technically On the technical front, Vivek Sagar’s music and background score are highlights, adding value to the film. The cinematography is also commendable. Editing is decent, and the production values are high, offering a rich output despite a modest budget. Plus Points - Story - Sree Vishnu’s acting - Comedy Minus Points - Confusing screenplay - Slow narration Rating by Telugu.yousay.tv: 2.5/5

ARM Movie Review: A Gripping Performance but a Predictable Plot.
ARM Movie Review: A Gripping Performance but a Predictable Plot.
Cast: Tovino Thomas, Krithi Shetty, Aishwarya Rajesh, Surabhi Lakshmi, Basil Joseph, Jagadish, Kabir Duhan Singh, and others Director: Jithin Lal Writer: Sujith Nambiar Music: Thibu Ninan Thomas Cinematography: Jomon T. John Editing: Shameer Muhammad Malayalam actor Tovino Thomas has also gained recognition in Telugu cinema. His lead roles in ‘Minnal Murali’ and ‘2018’ have been successful in Telugu as well. His latest film 'ARM' has now been released, featuring Tovino Thomas and Krithi Shetty in lead roles. In Malayalam, the film is titled ‘Ajayante Random Motionam’ (ARM), which translates in Telugu to ‘Ajayan’s Second Theft.’ How did the pan-India release 'ARM' fare? Did it enchant the Telugu audience? Has Tovino Thomas scored another hit? Let’s find out in this review. Plot Ajay (Tovino Thomas) lives a simple life in his village, doing small jobs and living with his mother (Rohini). His grandfather Maniyan (Tovino Thomas) was once a notorious thief, which leads villagers to suspect Ajay whenever a theft occurs. Meanwhile, the Sreebhuthi Lamp (an idol) in the village temple, more valuable than gold, attracts the attention of Sudeva Varma (Harish Uthaman), who plans to steal it and frame Ajay for the theft. However, Ajay’s family has been protecting this lamp for generations. How does Ajay save it this time? What is the history behind the idol? What role does the legendary hero Kunjikelu (Tovino Thomas) play in this history? What about Ajay’s love track with Lakshmi (Krithi Shetty)? You have to watch the movie to find out. Performances Tovino Thomas impressively portrays three different roles. His portrayal as the heroic Kunjikelu, with significant battle scenes, is captivating. His performance as grandfather Maniyan is also commendable, showing great versatility across his roles, from heroic to serene in Ajay’s character. Each character variation highlights his depth in acting. Krithi Shetty delivers a fine performance as Lakshmi, embodying a 90s girl perfectly. Surabhi Lakshmi’s role is engaging, appearing in a dual capacity that adds to the narrative. Rohini and Harish Uthaman’s characters are pivotal to the storyline. Direction Despite being his debut, director Jithin Lal’s execution of a story intertwined across three generations is clear and engaging. The entry of the legendary Kunjikelu accelerates the pace of the film with his heroics and the boon he asks from the king after saving the kingdom, followed by revelations that add intrigue. The portrayal of Maniyan’s character by the director stands out, particularly how he discovers where the lamp is and plans its theft. The confrontational scenes when Maniyan and Ajayan’s paths cross are emotionally powerful. However, other characters lack impact, a weak love track, predictable plot points, and a feeble climax detract from the film. Technically Technically, the film is high-quality. Thibu’s background score and songs add a fresh flair to the film. Jomon T. John’s cinematography is captivating. The editing is adequate, and the production values are high. Plus Points - Tovino Thomas’s acting - Historical backdrop - Music Minus Points - Predictable storyline - Weak climax Telugu.yousay.tv Rating: 3/5
