Kamal Haasan is among the most esteemed actors from India, known for his unique acting prowess. He has garnered recognition not just within the industry but also internationally, earning fans worldwide. Beyond acting, his roles as a writer, director, and producer have set him apart. Recently, on November 7th, Kamal Haasan celebrated his 70th birthday, receiving extensive wishes from celebrities and fans. Moreover, he has just released a sensational letter that has sparked interest across the Indian film industry.
In the letter, he stated…
Kamal Haasan is affectionately called “Ulaga Nayagan” by his fans, which translates to ‘Universal Star.’ Similarly, in Telugu, he is referred to as ‘Vishwa Nayakudu’ and ‘Loka Nayakudu,’ meaning global and people’s leader, respectively. However, in a recent release, Kamal expressed his discomfort with these honorifics. He shared this special letter on social media in English and Tamil, stating, “I am grateful for the many titles like Ulaga Nayagan given in appreciation of my work. Like other art forms, cinema belongs to everyone. I believe no artist is greater than the art itself. After much contemplation, I have decided to respectfully decline the star tags. I request my fans, fellow celebrities, and fellow Indians to address me simply as Kamal Haasan or K.H.”
“I am a perpetual student”
In his public letter, Kamal made more intriguing remarks. He noted that cinema is beyond any individual’s imagination and that he remains a perpetual student of this art. He expressed his desire to keep learning and advancing in his field, emphasizing that cinema, like other arts, belongs to everyone. It reflects the collective efforts of countless artists, technicians, and audiences, and represents a myriad of magnificent stories. Recognizing his own imperfections, he stated his commitment to improving as an actor, adhering to his roots without the need for titles.
And this Telugu star too…
Rejecting star tags is not new among actors. Known for his natural acting, Nani earned the title of ‘Natural Star’. In December 2021, during the promotions for “Shyam Singha Roy,” this young actor made interesting remarks about shedding his tag, suggesting people should just call him Nani. However, his fans continue to affectionately call him Natural Star. Similarly, Tamil actor Ajith has also announced that he rejects his tags. He requested not to be addressed with prefixes like ‘Thala’ or any other star tags, asking to be called simply Ajith Kumar or Ajith, AK.
