  • Ponniyin Selvan-2 Movie Review: Another Artistic Masterpiece from Mani Ratnam!

Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan, starring Tamil superstars, has received mixed responses at the box office. Some appreciated it, while others found it difficult to understand. However, the director has raised many questions in the film, and Ponniyin Selvan-2 seeks to answer them. With extensive promotions since last month, the film has finally been released. Did the movie succeed? Did Mani Ratnam create magic? Let’s review.

    Director: Mani Ratnam

Cast: Vikram, Aishwarya Rai, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Trisha, Sobhita, Aishwarya Lekshmi

    Music: A.R. Rahman

    Cinematography: Ravi Varman

    What’s the Story?

The first part ends with the conspiracy to assassinate Chola Prince Arunmozhi (Jayam Ravi). Did he really die? Will Vallavarayan (Karthi), who set out to uncover the conspiracies of the rival kings, save him? What did Aditya Karikalan (Vikram) do upon hearing the news of his brother’s death? Why does Nandini (Aishwarya Rai) wish to witness the end of the Cholas? Ponniyin Selvan-2 is the answer to all these questions.

    How is it?

The movie starts with a voiceover by a megastar. The story unfolds with Vallavarayan, Nandini, and the wise men trying to save Arunmozhi. The plot moves forward with Aditya Karikalan learning about the conspiracy and taking action.

The situations between Aditya Karikalan and Nandini serve as the highlight of the movie. Their encounter in one incident is at another level. Nandini’s desire to see the end of the Cholas and the ambitions of Pallavarayar to capture the kingdom are never boring.

In conclusion, Ponniyin Selvan-2 is a visual treat that delivers stellar performances and an engaging story, making it another artistic masterpiece from Mani Ratnam.

Trisha and Aishwarya Rai both dazzled in a frame that was so stunning, it felt like two eyes weren’t enough to take it all in. After the film’s opening, the decent screenplay gets somewhat slow at times, making the audience feel a bit restless. Even though it’s in Mani Ratnam’s style, one can’t help but feel that a little more polish would have been better.

The climax seems to have been wrapped up in a hurry, and the film could have connected more with the audience with a bit more focus.

    Performances

In Ponniyin Selvan 2, Vikram showcases his versatility. Despite limited screen space in the first part, he steals the show in the sequel. Aishwarya Rai is another unforgettable character, shining even in a role with a negative shade.

Jayam Ravi and Karthi breathed life into their characters. Many connected with Karthi’s character Vallavarayan in the first part of Ponniyin Selvan, and audiences will continue their journey with this character in the sequel. Trisha, Sobhita Dhulipala, and Aishwarya Lakshmi performed admirably within the confines of their roles.

Comparing the first part with the second, director Mani Ratnam made some improvements. The film was handled with a sense of balance. Despite the slow narration, the audience will undoubtedly be rooting for the hero.

Overall, while the film could have used a bit more polish and focus, the talented ensemble cast and Mani Ratnam’s signature touch make it an enjoyable experience for viewers.

    Technical Aspects

One of the highlights of the film is its cinematography. Ravi Varman captivates the audience with his skillful work, bringing the director’s vision to life with great finesse. The editing is also commendable. There is no need to mention the production values separately.

The music for the film is a plus point. Although A.R. Rahman showcases his talent in this movie, there are moments when it feels like it could have been better. It’s not completely disappointing, but it doesn’t quite reach the level one would expect from Rahman.
