Vijay’s “The Goat” (The Greatest Of All Time) lived up to expectations at the box office, grossing Rs. 282.5 crore worldwide in the first four days, narrowly missing the Rs. 300 crore club. However, it set a record as the highest-grossing Tamil film of the year. Dhanush’s recent film ‘Raayan’ crossed lifetime gross earnings of Rs. 154 crore within the first two days and set this feat. Notably, ‘The Goat’ grossed Rs. 106.40 crore in Tamil Nadu alone. In the two Telugu-speaking states, it collected Rs. 10.10 crore, Rs. 21.1 crore in Karnataka, Rs. 10.4 crore in Kerala, and Rs. 13.9 crore in the rest of India. Overseas, the film fetched around Rs. 120.15 crore according to trade estimates. Currently, the film is surging towards the Rs. 300 crore club.
What’s The Film Like?
Director Venkat Prabhu’s storyline doesn’t bring anything new to the table. Movies featuring a hero working in defense and the villain raising the hero’s son only to turn him against his father have been quite common. However, the scenes written about the son’s revenge seem interesting. The first half is mostly spent introducing the hero and other characters, with the story unfolding predictably until the pre-interval. The interval scene sets up an intriguing second half. Though the second half also largely unfolds as expected, the director successfully crafted an engaging climax. The twists in the second half will surprise the audience. The film’s comedy and dialogues are deeply infused with Tamil elements, which might not appeal as much to the Telugu audience. However, for Vijay’s fans, this film is sure to be a treat.
What’s the Story?
Gandhi (Vijay), a special anti-terrorism squad officer, conducts various successful missions with his teammates Sunil (Prashant), Ajay (Ajmal), and Kalyan Sundaram (Prabhu Deva). However, he keeps his job a secret from his wife Anu (Sneha). During one mission abroad, his five-year-old son dies. Believing her husband to be responsible, Anu distances herself from Gandhi. Distraught, Gandhi leaves the force. Years later, on a trip to Moscow, he encounters his son Jeevan (Vijay), whom he thought was dead, alive. Overjoyed, he brings him back to India. From then on, Gandhi’s acquaintances start dying one by one. Who is responsible for these deaths? How did his presumed-dead son come back? How does Gandhi stop the killings? These questions form the crux of the story.
