Nandamuri Kalyan Ram (Nandamuri Kalyan Ram) stars in the film ‘Devil’ directed by Abhishek Nama. Samyuktha plays the lead actress. The film portrays the situation in India before independence. Kalyan Ram, for the first time in his career, has played the role of a spy. Let’s see how the film turned out and whether it impressed the audience.

    Story

The story is set around 1945. The British government is attempting to capture Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. During this, the British agencies learn that Bose is about to step foot in India. They are determined to capture him at any cost. Meanwhile, in the Madras Presidency’s Rasapadu, the landowner’s daughter Vijaya (Abhirami) is murdered. The landowner is arrested under suspicion of murdering his daughter. To unravel this case, the British secret agent Devil (Kalyan Ram) enters the scene. What is the link between this case and the mission to capture Bose? Why was the murder committed? What is Agent Devil’s past? That forms the rest of the story.

    Performance

Kalyan Ram’s acting needs no special mention. As a British agent, he brought freshness to his looks and action. Especially in the fight sequences, Kalyan Ram was exceptional. Malavika Nair’s appearance and character were well-portrayed. Samyuktha Menon looked beautiful and impressed in a significant role. The actors who played British officers did well. Vasishta, Shafi, Mahesh, comedian Satya, Srikanth Iyengar, Abhirami, Esther, and others justified their roles.

    Direction

Director Abhishek Nama’s chosen story set in 1945 and its narrative feel fresh. The way he wrote the story and added the crime thriller genre keeps the audience engaged. However, the first half, though interesting, doesn’t feel suspenseful. The director tried to make the second half emotional, but it didn’t quite work out. Some scenes seem far from logic. Yet, the twists in the pre-climax and climax are impressive. The director has excellently executed the action sequences.

    Technically

Speaking of technical aspects, Harshavardhan Rameshwar’s songs are not very engaging and at times hinder the flow of the story. However, his background score is outstanding. The graphics are average. The movie setup, artwork, and camera work are commendable. The production values are high.

    • Art team’s effort
