BJP-led NDA announces Draupadi Murmu’s name as a Presidential candidate for the upcoming elections, in New Delhi on Tuesday. Smt Murmu will now face opposition-backed candidate Yashwant Sinha in the July presidential election.
Who is Smt. Draupadi Murmu?
- Smt Draupadi Murmu is the current Governor of Jharkhand and the tribal leader.
- She was the first Odisha tribal leader appointed as governor of an Indian state.
- She worked as a minister in the previous Odisha government which was a coalition of BJP and Biju Janata Dal
- Last time around, the BJP considered her as a presidential candidate, but it ultimately chose Shri Ram Nath Kovind ji.
- She spent nearly two decades in politics and social service after graduating from Rama Devi Women’s College in Bhubaneswar with a degree in arts.
