Today marks the birthday of late Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao. Pamulaparthi Venkata Narasimha Rao was born on June 28, 1921 in the village of Luknepally in Telangana’s Warangal district.
- He joined the Hyderabad State Congress Party in 1938.
- In 1951 he became a member of the All India Congress Committee.
- In 1957 he won as a MLA from Manthani constituency.
- He became the minister for the first time in 1962.
- He was elected as chief minister of Andhra pradesh in 1971.
- He served as Prime Minister of India from 1991- 1996.
He did not run in the general election in 1991. However, he was appointed Prime Minister of India (1991-1996) in the unusual circumstances of Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination. As a result, he became the first non-Hindi-speaking prime minister.
After becoming Prime Minister, he initiated new economic reforms to revitalize India’s ailing economy. Economic reforms instituted by P.V. Narasimha Rao laid the groundwork for the revival of the Indian economy. This legendary economist and politician is known as the “Father of Economic Reforms.”
