ANR 100th Birth Anniversary: Celebrating Akkineni Nageswara Rao, the Pioneer of Dance in Tollywood
Akkineni Nageswara Rao (ANR), one of the foundational pillars of Tollywood, needs no special introduction. Recognized as a Dadasaheb Phalke Award recipient, Padma Vibhushan, and Natasamrat, he left an indelible mark on the industry. Born on September 20, 1924, as his centenary completes today, fans globally are celebrating his 100th birth anniversary. Although widely known as a legendary actor, not everyone is aware that he was also an excellent dancer. In fact, he was the one who introduced dance to Tollywood, a fact that might be unknown to this generation. Let’s delve into this special report to learn more about it.

The Pioneer of Dance in Tollywood
Looking back to the early days of Tollywood, dance was not a primary focus when the industry first began. Leading actors were not keen on dancing; their focus was entirely on how to act and express emotions to captivate the audience. This was particularly noticeable between the 1960s and 1970s. When heroines danced, heroes would often just stand by, a point of criticism at the time. However, Akkineni Nageswara Rao completely changed these dynamics. While many associate Tollywood dance primarily with Megastar Chiranjeevi, it was Nageswara Rao who laid the groundwork for dance in the industry, making it an essential skill for heroes, matching and even excelling alongside heroines in dance. At one point, seeing Nageswara Rao’s dance, contemporaries like Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao, Superstar Krishna, Shobhan Babu, and Krishnam Raju also began to emphasize dance in their films.
Audiences Mesmerized by Akkineni's Steps!
In the 1971 film 'Dasara Bullodu', ANR’s performance in the song ‘Ettage Unnadi Olammi’ was mesmerizing. Similarly, in 'Bangaru Babu', his dance to 'Chengavi Rangu Cheera' electrified audiences who, until then, primarily enjoyed songs for their auditory appeal. Specifically, his dance in 'Prem Nagar' for the song ‘Nenu Puttanu Lokam Navvindi’ became a trendsetter. Additionally, his competitive dance with Sridevi in 'Premabhishekam' for the song 'Ne Kallu Chebuthunnayi' delighted everyone. He also matched steps with Megastar Chiranjeevi in the film 'Mechanic Alludu'. There’s a long list of such performances, some of which are linked below for a glimpse into his prowess.

Inspired by Nageswara Rao...
Even Megastar Chiranjeevi, known for his dance, was inspired by Nageswara Rao at one point. It’s said that Chiru enhanced the importance of dance in films after watching Nageswara Rao’s movies. In an event, Chiranjeevi made interesting remarks about ANR's influence, noting that after watching Chiru’s dance, one might wonder if his body actually had any bones at all. Over the decades, as Chiranjeevi became a peerless hero in acting and dancing, he carried forward the legacy initiated by Nageswara Rao, which now continues with stars like Allu Arjun, Ram Charan, NTR, and Ram Pothineni.

He noted that ANR's iconic roles and invaluable contributions to Telugu cinema are unforgettable and serve as a guiding light to all actors. Balakrishna urged everyone to express their gratitude for the immense services ANR provided to the film industry, from theater to cinema. His journey is an inspiration to all.

Ties and Tangles: The Marital Saga of the Akkineni Family
Tollywood actor Akkineni Naga Chaitanya and renowned actress Sobhita Dhulipala are soon to be united in marriage. Their engagement ceremony was recently held in the presence of family members, a grand affair announced personally by Akkineni Nagarjuna, which quickly went viral. However, Naga Chaitanya was previously married to star actress Samantha. Due to disagreements, they separated. With Naga Chaitanya's recent engagement, the topic of his divorce has resurfaced. There is also a discussion online suggesting that marriages do not seem to last in the Akkineni family, with netizens recalling that nearly four couples within the family have gone through divorces. Let's now look into the details of these instances.
The Akkineni Family
Even before the divorce between Naga Chaitanya and Samantha, four other couples in the family had already ended their marriages. The legendary actor Akkineni Nageswara Rao and Annapurnamma had five children, among them, Akkineni Nagarjuna became a well-known actor. Their eldest son, Akkineni Venkat, produced several films. Their daughter, Satyavati's children, Sumanth and Supriya, are also well-recognized in the Telugu film industry. Another daughter, Nagasusheela's son Sushanth, is also making his mark as an actor.

Nagarjuna’s Divorce
Sumanth’s Divorce
Sumanth, the nephew of Nagarjuna and son of Satyavati and Surendra Yarlagadda, was doing well in his career when he fell in love with actress Keerthi Reddy, famed for 'Tholi Prema'. They married in August 2004 but, for unknown reasons, divorced two years later. Keerthi Reddy settled in Bangalore, while Sumanth has remained single and is recently becoming busy with films again.
Tragedy in Supriya’s Life
Sumanth's sister, Supriya Yarlagadda, also faced a similar situation. She debuted as an actress in the movie 'Akkada Ammayi Ikkada Abbayi', starring Pawan Kalyan. Later, she distanced herself from acting and got more involved in film production. Eventually, she married an actor named Charan Reddy with the approval of her elders, but their marriage did not last long. Charan Reddy passed away due to health issues, and since then, she has been living alone.
Cancellation of Akhil’s Marriage
Before the marriage of Naga Chaitanya and Samantha, Akhil Akkineni was ready to tie the knot. His engagement also took place with Shriya Bhupal, a relative of Ram Charan’s wife Upasana. However, this did not lead to marriage. For some reasons, Akhil and Shriya's wedding was canceled. Following the cancellation, Shriya Bhupal married another man, while Akhil has been striving for success in the film industry.
Naga Chaitanya and Samantha’s Divorce
In 2017, Naga Chaitanya and Samantha got married in Goa, after a love that blossomed following their acquaintance during the making of the movie ‘Ye Maaya Chesave’ in 2010. After seven years of being in a relationship, they got married and were recognized as Tollywood’s cute couple. Unexpectedly, they divorced in 2021, shocking fans and the entire cinema world. At that time, Samantha was heavily criticized, with some blaming her bold roles in films post-marriage as the reason for their separation.

ANR Centennial: Chiranjeevi Reflects on Past Conflict with Mohan Babu as He Receives National Award
The centennial celebrations of Akkineni Nageswara Rao were held grandly on Monday at Annapurna Studios in Hyderabad. The event was attended by numerous celebrities including Megastar Chiranjeevi, Amitabh Bachchan, Akkineni Nagarjuna, Ram Charan, and Naga Chaitanya. During the event, Chiranjeevi was honored with the 'ANR National Award'. The award was presented to him by Amitabh Bachchan. Subsequently, Chiranjeevi reminisced about a past dispute with Mohan Babu during the Diamond Jubilee celebrations.
What Happened?
In 2007, during the 75th anniversary of the Telugu film industry, the Tollywood community celebrated the Diamond Jubilee event where it was decided to honor Megastar Chiru with a Legendary Award. Actor Mohan Babu made some sharp comments about this. He mentioned that some came to honor him as a celebrity, not as a legend, and suggested, "Write a book defining what a legend is and what a celebrity is and then give awards. Am I not a legend for being the first actor from the industry to serve in Rajya Sabha, for educating 25% of poor students for free, for acting in more than 500 films, and producing 45 films?"
https://twitter.com/lyf_a_zindagii/status/1850924373890552313
What did Chiru say?
Reacting to Mohan Babu's questioning, Chiranjeevi responded strongly. "There are Rama Rao, Raghavendra Rao, Bapu, Vishwanath, and Dasari Narayana Rao; they are the legends. Give the award to them. My peers like Balakrishna, Venkatesh, Nagarjuna, and I are of the same age. Don’t separate me from them by giving me this award. I’ve said before that I don’t want the Legendary Award. However, some objected when I was about to receive it. If I am deemed unworthy, I will not accept the award. I will surrender it in a box and will only take it when I am deemed worthy. By the time of the 100-year celebrations, if I become a legend along with Balakrishna, Venkatesh, Nagarjuna, Pawan Kalyan, and Mahesh Babu, I will accept it. Until then, I bury that award," he stated during the Diamond Jubilee celebration.
What did Chiru say at the ANR event?
At the prestigious ANR National Award ceremony, Megastar Chiranjeevi received the award. Recalling the Diamond Jubilee event, he expressed, "If I consider the Telugu film industry my home, then the opportunity to win came in 2007. I was very happy that everyone agreed to honor me with the Legendary Award. However, due to some adversities, I felt it was not the right time to accept it. I decided to keep the award in a box until I felt worthy. Today, receiving the great ANR award, particularly from Amitabh Bachchan and with my friend Nagarjuna welcoming me wholeheartedly, I feel like I have truly won at home."

‘I was shivering at those words’
Chiranjeevi made interesting remarks about Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan, who presented the award. He noted that whenever something good happens or he receives an award, the first congratulations come from Amitabh. Recalling the Padma Vibhushan award, Chiranjeevi mentioned, "When I received the Padma Vibhushan, Amitabh called me the 'King of Indian Cinema,' which made me shiver. But it filled my heart with immense joy. When I approached him for the role of my mentor in the movie 'Sye Raa,' he immediately agreed without considering formalities (remuneration), saying, ‘No need for that... you are my friend.’"

HBD Nagarjuna: Nagarjuna's Birthday Special- Daring Hero!
Entering the industry as the heir of the legendary actor Akkineni Nageswara Rao, Nagarjuna has undertaken experiments that no other hero would dare to attempt. He fearlessly moved forward in his career with a variety of unique films, earning a distinct recognition in genres ranging from mass and class to spiritual and romantic. He successfully introduced his sons, Naga Chaitanya and Akhil, as the third generation from the Akkineni family into the industry. Behind Nagarjuna's success in the industry are some daring steps. Let's learn about them on the occasion of his birthday today (August 29).
'Siva' Sensation
Typically, early in their careers, most heroes opt for safe stories. However, Nagarjuna made a big impact with the experimental film 'Siva'. He took a significant risk by giving Ram Gopal Varma, who had never even been an assistant director, a chance to direct. This daring step turned his career around, creating a sensation with 'Siva' in a way no one anticipated. This film not only changed the trajectory of Nag's career but also altered the course of Tollywood, challenging the traditional perceptions of a hero's role with 'Siva'.
Diversity a Priority
With 'Siva', Nagarjuna became a top hero in the industry. While typically a single hit film would set a repetitive pattern in stories, Nagarjuna planned his career to ensure diversity in every film. This strategy led him to star in a supernatural heist film 'Govinda Govinda', a family drama 'Ninne Pelladatha', and an action entertainer 'Hello Brother', continually delighting his fans and establishing a dedicated fan base, thereby solidifying his status as a star hero.
'Annamayya'
At a time when peers like Chiranjeevi, Balakrishna, and Venkatesh were dominating with commercial films, Nagarjuna shocked everyone by signing on to the devotional project 'Annamayya'. Already popular for his mass image, his decision to do a devotional film raised eyebrows within the industry. Committed to portraying diverse roles, Nagarjuna embraced the challenge without hesitation, delivering a performance in 'Annamayya' that became a landmark in his career. Directed by K. Raghavendra Rao, the film was a sensational success, capturing the true essence of Annamayya and earning two National Awards, nine Nandi Awards, and three Filmfare Awards.
More Spiritual Films
Following the success of 'Annamayya', Nagarjuna didn't stop there. While continuing to act in commercial films, he also starred in more devotional films. Films like 'Sri Ramadasu', 'Shirdi Sai', 'Om Namo Venkatesaya', and 'Jagadguru Adi Shankar' under the combination of Raghavendra Rao and Nagarjuna also achieved great success at the box office.
Opportunities for Newcomers
Nagarjuna has proven time and again that not only is giving chances to newcomers not a risk, but it can also lead to success. Throughout his extensive acting career, he has introduced around 40 directors to Tollywood. Directors like Ram Gopal Varma ('Siva'), YVS Chowdary (Sri Sita Ramula Kalyanam Chootamu Raarandi), Lawrence ('Mass'), and Vijay Binni ('Naa Saami Ranga') are included in this list. Nagarjuna often credits these new directors for playing a pivotal role in his stardom.
The First Pan-India Star from Telugu Cinema
Director Krishna Vamsi, in an interview, made interesting remarks about Nagarjuna, describing him as the hero who took Telugu cinema global. Nagarjuna brought directors from various industries and produced diverse films with his own money, significantly altering the audience's perspective. He worked with directors like Mani Ratnam, Priyadarshan, Ravichandran, and Mahesh Bhatt from Malayalam, Kannada, Hindi, and Tamil industries, becoming a true Pan-India foundation.

As the Host of Bigg Boss...
Unlike most stars who shy away from television, Nagarjuna embraced it. He has been hosting the Telugu Bigg Boss show for several years, entertaining the television audience with his charm. While younger heroes like NTR and Tarak hosted for only a season, Nagarjuna has been continuously hosting, completing five seasons (Bigg Boss 3, 4, 5, 6, 7) and is set to host the upcoming eighth season. He has also been notable as the host of the 'Meelo Evaru Koteeswarudu' game show.

The Fitness Mantra
Even at the age of sixty, Nagarjuna's fitness level amazes the younger generation of heroes. Maintaining his physique from his 'Siva' days, he continues to give tough competition to younger heroes. Nagarjuna often shares that his secret to looking great is his calm demeanor and regular workouts. Having debuted as a hero in 1986 with 'Vikram', Nagarjuna has now acted in over a hundred films. Currently, he is working under the direction of Shekhar Kammula in 'Kubera'.
