The Indian U19 team created history by beating England and lifting the world cup for a record-extending fifth time. A five-wicket haul by Raj Bawa and a four-wicket one by Ravi Kumar helped restrict England to a score of 189. Later half-centuries by Shaik Rasheed and Nishant Sandhu helped India cruise the total in 47.4 overs. Raj Bawa for hi splendid bowling was declared man of the match.
An ecstatic Indian captain said, “Proud moment for India, that we have managed to achieve this. It was difficult at the start to get the combination right, but as time went we became a family and the team atmosphere was good. A great moment to be playing under this lot of support staff”
England skipper Tom Prest on the other hand rued the fact that their team could not bat first. He felt that the way James Rew batted, he definitely deserved a hundred and was confident of victory, on account of the English bowling strength, but India’s superlative batting did them in.
BCCI president Sourav Ganguli in his message to the young Indian team after their fantastic victory read, “Congratulations to the under 19 team and the support staff and the selectors for winning the world cup in such a magnificent way. The cash prize announced by us of 40 lakhs is a small token of appreciation but their efforts are beyond value-maginificent stuff.”
With this stupendous victory, the Indian under 10 team has only reaffirmed India’s preeminent status as a cricketing power extraordinaire. The stupendous performance of the team in lifting the world cup showcases the fact that there are plenty of super talented and hard-working youngsters ready to step in and deliver for the national side when the current crop of Indian cricketing stars decide to call it a day.
